Guimarães

Guimarães is a unique and special city! It stands out for its heritage, the inspiring landscape, the entrepreneurial capacity, the feeling of belonging and the dynamism of its population.

The creation of the city of Guimarães dates back to the 10th century, and it was here, in 1128, that Portuguese nationality was founded and D. Afonso Henriques was recognized as the first King of Portugal.

The enhancement of the cultural function and the investment in heritage resulted in the creation of a network of high quality infrastructures and in the regeneration of the historic centre, recognized by UNESCO in 2001 as Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Guimarães is the seat of a densely populated municipality, with more than 160,000 inhabitants, being the second largest Portuguese municipality outside the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, in terms of resident population, and one of the youngest in Europe – almost 50% of its inhabitants have less than 30 years.

Alongside the traditional relevance of the textile industry, other sectors have emerged, with greater technological incorporation, of growing economic significance and which confirm the strategic importance of the University of Minho as a generator of knowledge and innovation for the city and the region.

Come and discover a unique region, where the traditions and customs of the past coexist with the avant-garde and modernity. Endless possibilities, ranging from adventure, through well-being and culture, welcome the visitor who chooses this authentic destination.
